who has a learning disability while in college?

I figured those who are learning disabled in college would understand. I have a huge problem with reading! I mean, I can read but when I read a textbook, I cannot grasp the main idea of what’s going on even in one paragraph. I’ll get small fragments of what’s being said but it seems like nothing comes to my head. Even reading one sentence at a time doesn’t help because once I finish one sentence, I go to the next then forget the previous sentence and lose the entire picture! It always seem like when I read a textbook, it’s all technical and not in layman’s terms though that might not be true. I feel so overwhelmed and don’t know what to do. I’m afraid to ask the teachers because I’m in college and I thought if I asked them, then that’ll make me seem like I’m stupid or something. Aren’t I expected to know a lot and be smarter while in college? It’s like I’m expected to know and understand a lot while reading in college. Often when I read a textbook, my mind is off elsewhere!

First thing to is to get tested so you can get verification for your learning disabity. Once you take these test you will be able to get help. Notetakers, Longer time on tests. The last thing and the most important is the fact that a learning disabity is reall a learning differance. You are not stupid. You are not dumb. Some very sucessful people have learning disabities.

I’m in college & I have a similar learning problem. If you do better remembering what you hear than what you read ask if you can tape record lectures. Also read aloud & record yourself then listen to it when you’re studying. Also taking notes on what I read helps. You could do an outline or summary of each chapter, page or even paragraph depending on how much you can retain. In college you are expected to know about your learning style/disability but you’re not expected to deal w/ it alone. If you have a documented disability talk to your schools disability resource office. If you don’t have a documented disability go get yourself tested… Disability resourcces may be able to help w / that too. If you’re getting overwhelmed try reading & doing notes or w/e for a short time, then take a 10 min break to regroup & go back to it. Also many textbooks have CD roms w/ study guides so check that out. It’s NOT going to be easy but you can succeed if you work hard, get the right help & don’t give up

I can understand what you are going through.I have LD and no one pushed me to learn.I was

just worked at my own level in school which I felt

was a dis-service to me. I am 48 by the way.

I droped out of school when I found out I would

not be getting a diploma. In 1979 I enrolled in

Community college to take some remedial courses and was having trouble. When I told

the instructor I had LD. She used the two words

at me”DROP OUT” and that kids like me have

no right thinking about college. This is not

directed at you. This is what happened to me and

I was born 20 years too early for any decent help.

Back to you.DO not give up.go to a reading clinic

and take some remedial reading classes and

do not let anyone tell you to give up.I hope

peoples way of thinking is better today.

If the problem does not stem from to much booze and college partying the nights prior, then perhaps you are taking courses that suggest pre-requisites prior to the main course you are taking.

There is the chance that the school you were educated in prior to college was a lower class school that did not teach at the level college entrance requires.

Also, you may need a mentor course for reading and word meaning and usage. Many colleges give access to these specialized courses. You will have to go to a counselor and ask. Embarrassment is not the issue….do you want a degree…that’s the question.

You made it through high school, assuming the teachers did not just shuttle you through, to get you out and unfairly get you out of their class and grade….

There might be a cognitive issue…get some testing from an individual who specializes in this field of work.

Good Luck to you and I hope you have much success and years of good college experiences that will lead you to that degree and higher paying job in the future……hard work pays off.

touch the counseling workplace, there are dissimilar components obtainable to every person who has a gaining wisdom of incapacity at faculties. I even have taken quite a few instructions with people who had a incapacity. One female have been given further time on assessments, yet another became into in part deaf and had an interpreter in college.

You need to go somewhere where you can concentrate to read. Try reading aloud, or with a partner.May be if you read together, you can discuss the meaning of the reading together. Do you ever read anything that you enjoy? If so, start with that. You have to make yourself like what you are reading, or you wont be in to it!
