Research shows that students receiving education under the ED label (I say this respectfully) are like roaches in a roach motel. They check in but they don’t check out. Rarely and I do mean RARELY do kids ever get out of special education under that label.

Some children are able to make progress and will be able to be mainstreamed back into gen ed. classes, but more often they stay for years in the self contained classes. If the child is having success in the self contained class, then the parent & teacher should move him/her to the next least restrictive placement and begin transitioning him/her to a general ed class at least part time, with the goal of moving to full time gen ed if there is success.

I agree with Cindy and unfortunately I agree with Thomas…it’s hard to get out special ed under that category. If it is your desire for your special needs child to move out of the self-contained classroom, then have that written into the IEP – make it a plan and have the IEP team memebers accountable for it.

Until it is safe for them to be among the regular school population with or without an aide.

until there is suffient reason to move them out. in most cases they get better education and personal attention in special classes — its a benefit not a punishment.

for as long and they need the one on one assistance. or the students and parent and teachers evaluate the student and all agree to have the student move on .
