Parent-Teacher Academic Conferences—New teacher Advice??

I have the PAC’s coming up on October 12th. Each parent is scheduled for a 15 mins, session with me. Besides their report card, what else do I cover?! Help, I hate talking with parents! It gets me all nervous!!

Talk about their effort and attitude, how they interact with other students in the classroom, ask the parents if they have any concerns or questions regarding things in the classroom and no matter what, make sure that you praise their child or acknowledge an area where they might be achieving – if the parent is happy, you normally get a happy student (And if they have been hearing a lot of negatives, it is nice to hear one nice thing!).

I agree with Em…you have to cover several things besides their report card. For example…how they get along with their classmates…depending on the grade level, do they share, are they cooperative, do they have a good attitude? Always present the positive comments first, even if it’s only that their child has a nice smile, because once a parent hears something positive, the negative will not be as hard to take…as long as it’s done constructively. Good luck…you’ll do fine.

I would begin with the grade report…you may have to explain the parts of it, that always takes some time. Try to personalize anything you say….parents like to feel like their kid matters, instead of just part of the class as a whole. I taught high school and would have 100 students, but I tried to make sure I had something personal about every one to talk to the parents about…even if it was as small as their kid being friendly every day.

Talk about their child’s behavior in class, any future activities coming up and if their child has a poor grade, tell them what caused it exactly. If it was a certain project or their attitude towards school in general.
