I had a Philosophy professor once & asked him “What is your Philosophy?”

His response: “A stitch in time saves nine.”

Well, the one that comes to mind is what Abaham Lincoln said: “I defeat my enemy when I make him my friend.” It may not be the most meaningful but atleast one of the most meaningful quotes I’ve read.

“The masses of men lead lives of quiet desperation”

Henry David Thoreau

When I a junior in high school, I took Expository Writing (college prep writing course). On the first day of the class, the teacher wrote that quote on the board and assigned us our first essay (to discuss what we thought about the quote). That was 30 years ago–and I have never forgot the quote! It is the first quote I ever memorized.

Now as a teacher myself, I do the same (although not necessarily on the first day of class). The quote really gets students thinking.

“I did not know then that pride is a wonderful terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines; life and death.

It has a very strong meaning to it.
