What does “to each his own” mean?

I look it up on YAHOO! answer, but people come up with many opinion/answers. I don’t really which one is the right answer, because it could be wrong.

Generally, it means that each person is entitled to his/her own opinion and/or lifestyle (“to each his own”), even though someone else may not agree with the opinion or lifestyle. It many times is a simple wisecrack or statement by someone who either doesn’t agree with or doesn’t understand the other person’s opinions/actions. However, some people live by this statement, meaning they don’t particularly judge another person, so it is meant as a statement of goodwill towards others.

it’s a positive pre-Christian Roman law. To each his own. What is Caesars give to Ceaser and to each his own. Its about recognizing individual credit for thought, opinion and property. Then came the christians, The empire fell, they outlawed collective joy and gave the one-god got credit for everything, and thereafter ‘to each his own’ speaks of guilt

It means your way, or your preference: what you think, what you like, what you believe, what you think is right

For instance: She prefers the beach and he prefers the mountains. To each his own.

or She prefers classic rock and he prefers opera.

To each his own. Whatever floats your boat.
