What does closure mean?

What does it mean when someone says “I need closure” or something? Can someone define it and put it into context for me?

If someone says “I need closure” it means a sense of psychological certainty or completeness. After a stressful event, a person needs some symbol or sign that it’s finally over, and time to move on to something else. That episode is totally done with.

For example, when a person gets a divorce, it is often a long drawn out and messy process involving complicated interactions and many steps to take. Closure in that situation might be symbolized by signing the final divorce papers – or further on, getting married to someone else. That would be a significant event that had no roots in the former relationship, and therefore a sign that the old times were gone. finito. kaput. hasta la vista baby.
