I think that Mr George Bernard Shaw wrote quite a wise quote. The first line could also mean to lose the want of gaining your hearts desires as well (such as depression)… or it could mean to suffer sever loss of what one has once had. The second half hoiwever , I do not interpret like every one else above has… I think that it means the pain it takes in attaining your goals and your desires. It is mever easy getting to where you want to be, the road is a long and rocky road.

I think Shaw is in one sense trying to shock the reader and play the role of cynical writer in that both not getting and getting your dreams can be tragic. The road to hell is littered with souls of those who gained their dreams and became worse of a person.
In another sense, he is saying that not gaining your dream and giving up is a tragedy, while gaining your dream and losing motivation is also a tragedy. He s saying the best place to live is between those two – to not get so down that you give up and always have another dream so you don t lose motivation that keeps you on edge.

I’ve lived through the 1st. So, contrary to old George, I’d rather have the 2nd any day. Knowing your dreams are futile kinda takes the joy out of life. One ends up marking time til the end.

I disagree with this quote, because people who are losing their heart’s desires and ignoring it, is not one of the tragedies in a person’s life. for me it is a part of our life and we need to gain it….. IT IS GOD’S DECISION PeOpLe!!!!

Love that quote. It makes sense. If you lose your heart’s desire, you’re devastated. When you gain your heart’s desire, there’s nothing else to live for, nothing else to strive for.

Too much information
A similar quote is “God often punishes us by giving us exactly what we ask for” It means what we desire may not be what is best for us.

i actually disagree with this quote. if you get your heart’s desire, you have everything you ever wanted, which is better than not having it at all. you should be happy beacsue if you get your heart’s desire then you cherish it until teh day you die. losing your heart’s desire would be devestating however, because nobody wants to lose it.

Its brilliant! If you can learn never to desire.

But there is one exception: “better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all”

I find love is the exception to all quotes.

We all suffer events in our life that makes us want to give and stop trying..even worse, it causes most of us to stop caring. Eventually we have to learn to forgive and forget and honsetly its harder to do that.
