Thoreau believed that society caused people to wander through life aimlessly. By putting himself in nature he was able to live with a purpose. He was quite a philosphical man. Have you read The Great Gatsby, I reccommend it!

It is hard to comprehend as we are usually struggling to attain somenthing. He went to the woods as a participant and an observer. His wants were few so he spent little time working to support himself. He had plenty of time to smell the roses. I am reminded of the priest who was robbed of all his posessions and said as he sat naked, ” I wish I could have given him this beautiful moon.
