Well, some relationships such as teacher-student relationships or boss-employee relationships have set roles that each individual will stick to. A friendship is not a simple relationship where specific roles are constantly followed. Friends neither always lead or always follow, they work together and help each other along when it is needed, more than anything else they are company.

The speaker simply wants to be a friend, and by that, he means equal treatment between him and the person being addressed. Hence, the speaker tells the person that he, the speaker, will not give the person orders or directions that will make him appear as the leader. Neither should the person give the speaker orders and directions because the speaker will not obey or follow those orders and directions.

a friend should not tell a person what to do or be told what to do by another but, they should always stay beside you no matter what and give you support

It means that you want that person to be your equal….that you are no more important than they are and they are no more important than you.
