Can I get into medical school starting out in community college?

I’m in my first year of community college and i was wondering if i could still become a doctor. I slacked off during high school, and it just hit me that i need to start my life. What are the steps to getting into medical school? What classes should i take pre-medical school? Any information would help. Thank you.

absolutely. but I believe after 2 years you need to transfer to a 4 year university as most schools require a bachelor’s degree. The requirements to apply are to take the MCAT, and two semesters of Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biology, English, Mathematics and Physics. Make sure you take the majority of prereqs at the 4 year university, though (you can take some at CC). You can major in whatever you want as long as you fulfill the requirements (actually, non science majors on average score higher on every section of the MCAT, and have slightly higher acceptance rates to med school, because of there well roundedness and analytical skills. I majored in Political Science in college and was accepted to school. Generally, the rule of thumb is 3.5 + 30MCAT and your money. But also, the most important thing to make sure medicine is right for you- volunteer in the hospital alot, perhaps do some EMS, and learn more about the field, as most people at the beginning of there college careers are illadvised when they think for sure they want to be physicians. But if you end up deciding on medicine, I wish you the best of luck.

I actually started off in a community college and now I’m pre-med at a university. Chances are, you’ll probably want to transfer to a university once you’re done with the community college so look into what classes you can take at your CC that can transfer (i.e., college credits) to a major university come your Junior year.

You should see a counselor also, because they can help you with this information. Starting out in a CC is actually better because being pre-med, you know what the cost is going to be in the future.

I am on the medical track myself, and I have heard many people on admissions of medical school saying they DO NOT like people taking the pre-med classes at a two-year college. I tried to take some summer classes at a community college but I was completely advised against it. So I would try to get into a four-year school as soon as you can. You will have to take calculus, general chemistry, biology, organic chemistry, and physics. In addition, you have to choose a major. Biology and chemistry are the most popular majors among those admitted to medical school but it doesn’t matter what you major in as long as you do well. Medical school is VERY competitive. You need to keep your GPA above a 3.5 and score well on the MCAT. The MCAT covers all the pre-med classes. It’s a long, difficult, expensive road (NOT made for slackers) but if you are willing to put in lots of study and hard work, you’ll make it. Good luck, and start looking for four-year schools you can apply to.

You can become a doctor at any time. It doesn’t really matter what your past was. If you didn’t do well at high school, you can do well now. The best bet is to contact the medical school(s) you might want to go to, and find out what their prerequisites are. You can also simply ask them what you’re asking us. Somebody should be able to help you.

Hey. You’ve already started your life. You’re living.

You can still get into med schools and you need to take biology classes as major courses. Go consult with an advisor.

Make a small list of medical schools you would like to attend. Call or write to them to see if they accept your credits earned from the C.C you are attending.

This year, just worry about getting good enough grades to get into a good 4 year college.
