Why do we need music in schools?

Some schools in my area have been getting rid of their music programs. As a dedicated former choir kid and marching band fan ( I graduated in ’06), I plan on writing letters to my Board of Education and superintendent about why they should not get rid of the music program in our district. I know how the programs have affected me and my friends, but I was also hoping to include statistics and a long list of jobs related to music. Anyone know anything that could help me out?

You all make good pts. and Fine Arts should be offered. But at some level you just have to say (to the kids this statrement applies to), “Until you can READ at a certain proficiency, you’ll be in a Reading Classroom while the others a doing thier Do-Re-Mi’s.

Music actually helps a kid’s brain develop and excel at the area of math and science. In Japan, every child is required to learn an instrument as it will help them in school. I think that it’s vey sad that your school board is getting rig of the music programs. I am in band right now and I enjoy it. Good luck.

I know that students who are involved in music programs tend to do better in math classes and are more disciplined. I wish i could tell you where i read that but it was so long ago. I feel your pain though..i was in choir from 3rd grade until my senior year in high school and it was a big part of my life. I hope you get through to the Board.

gettinf rid of any of the “arts” (music, art, drama) doesnt give kids a chance to develop their talents, and without anyone helping or encouraging them theyll never know if they have any musical talent. getting rid of music in schools closes doors on kids’ futures…it would be a dull world indeed without music and art and creativity. not every kid is talented at english and math and science, some really shine at music, and getting rid of music in schools stifles the hopes and talents of those kids…they may just need encouragement, and doing away with music just tells them that music isnt important…which cant be farther from the truth. its sad, really. very sad.
