Why do some people feel it is so strange to homeschool?

It’s a good chioce if (as in our case as well as most schools lately) the local schools aren’t that great. I won’t have to worry about what my kids are learning and yes they will still be socialized. They will still have the options of extra curricular activities /sports /clubs. They will still have their homecoming dances and proms. They will still have their class trips and field trips. So…what is so strange? What will they miss out on?

How could a parent or any one adult know all things about all subject areas in such a wide range of age groups (ages 5-17)? I have a BS degree in Elem. Education and taught over 34 years, but am the first to admit that I couldn’t teach a 5 year old how to write correctly, nor could I teach a 17 year old how to do advanced calculus! I am so glad that all you home school “teachers” are so much smarter than I am! As for sports, proms, etc where does your child get that? I have never heard of a homeschoolers’ prom nor basketball league. Do you mean a prom at the (heaven forbid) local public school. Do you pay extra for that too, or do you let the local school system pick up the bill?

I think the biggest dangers of home schooling both involve isolation from the outside world.

Kids need to learn to socialize and communicate with other people, besides their families. Being part of a larger group of home schooling families for social and educational support will definitely help reduce that as in issue.

The only other issue is whether being exposed to only one’s family’s point of vie for all issues in life. This could serve to isolate the student in the future. Going thru school, with different teachers, classmates, etc. is much more like the real work world than a home school environment. So that may be an issue.

As has been said, you have to weigh the schools in your area, the cost of private schools and the issues of home schooling and then come up with a good answer.

There are many ways to travel through life, some work well for some and others don’t.

People are such a lot secure with what’s acquainted and inside social norms. It is less difficult to pass judgement on an unfamiliar situtation situated upon what others have stated in opposition to it than it’s to do the study required to attract your possess conclusions. Homeschooling is external of the norm and such a lot individuals don’t seem to be quite conversant in it or the way it works, in order that they use arguments which they’ve heard others use in opposition to it. Assumptions comparable to a loss of socialization, deficient academic requirements, and the isolation of homeschool households are arguments which were round for years. These have lengthy considering the fact that demonstrated to be misguided assesments of homeschooling, however that’s what’s available in the market so individuals who desire to argue in opposition to homeschooling with no need any truly talents approximately their matter nonetheless use them. It is honestly correct to mention that children in tuition study from every different. The truly query is, is what they’re studying from every different constructive or poor? Having attended public colleges, and labored in schooling, I have come to the belief that it’s customarily poor. I am certain that my daughter will develop up simply exceptional with out bringing residence alternative phrases which don’t seem to be allowed in my condominium or being beneath regular strain to have intercourse, take a look at medicines, and get dressed within the provocative patterns that such a lot of younger ladies put on to tuition at the moment. While I observe that my daughter will run into all of matters while a homeschooler, I might be in a bigger function to support her via such instances, for the reason that I might be extra quite simply to be had to her than I could be if she had been in tuition.

I wish I could do it but I work. However, homeschooled children interact differently with other children and other adults due to being around adults a greater percentage of the time. For example, the homeschooled children at my child’s ballet often sit apart and seem to either talk to the other adults or the other homeschooled children than to play with the kids. If you can honestly say this does not bother you (don’t think it would me) and you can afford homeschooling (my friend’s costs $2000/yr. per child) then I think the education is much better.

there is nothing wrong with home schooling if you can afford it, i wish i could. i have a friend who home schools all 3 of her kids, the only bad thing about it is the kids do not know how to socialize with others. the kids don’t even want to play sports for the local school.
