Panama City was the first Spanish settlement on the Pacific Ocean, and it was founded by Pedro Arias de Avila on August 15, 1519.
Now Panama City has always been called Panama City. The area where Panama is presently located had different names until the Republic of Panama was formed in 1821.
Before that the Spanish conquistadors referred to the area as “Castilla de Oro” or Golden Castille in English. Close to it was an area called “Veragua” or Abundant in Water in English. Panama City itself was often called “La Tazita de Oro” or the Golden Cup.
Hope that helps.
