what productive silent activitiy can 30 3rd graders do for 30 mins in hallway while taking turns for bathroom?

Children must be quiet so they do not disturb nearby classrooms. They are only allowed one bathroom break and with 30 children and one teacher this takes 30 minutes and we don’t want to loose learning time. Obviously not all kids are in the line at once so the activity must allow for coming and going

When I was in the 3rd grade, when we were waiting for something, we played that telephone game where the first person whispers sometheing to the next person, until it gets to the last person, then you see what it turned into.

Sometimes when I sub-teach in elementary, I’ll have them mime the song “Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes”. This can be done with any action song they may know – check with the music teacher for their repetoire.

Also, I’ve found most students like to follow what a “leader” is doing. Have a student be the leader, miming actions (opening and closing hands; tapping right knee, then left knee), then changing when everyone has it right.

Have a great school year!
