Tomorrow is my first day of middle school, at a new school,”WHAT SHOULD I D?”?

My first day of middle school is tomorrow and I don’t know what to do, what to take, what to say, what to write, what to think, or where to go.

It’s quite understandable that you would be so apprehensive the first day and at a new school. You will do just fine. Just please remember to be yourself, very natural. You want to seem interested in school and getting to meet some new people but, at the same time, not seem so desperate to fit-in. After a couple days of getting accustomed to your surroundings, perhaps you can look into some afterschool activities to join such as the community service club, theatre workshop or sports-related club. The school may also need a student office aide to help out during school such as in the guidance counselor’s office or principal’s office. And concentrating on one’s studies would be a great way to not have to worry so much about the social aspect of school.

P.S. Please remember Not to engage in any dangerous behaviors just to ‘fit in’ such as not using inhalants (inhaling fumes from household products like glue, paint, gasoline, whipped cream dispenser which is nitrous oxide, aerosol spray can or any other gas or solvent, ) also known as huffing, sniffing, bagging, glading, chroming. A friend has a traumatic brain injury (tbi) and other permanent damage such as bone marrow (fatty inner lining of the bones that cushions the joints and makes blood cells) damage from when she was just age 12, now in her 30’s. A person can die or become permanently disabled even after ‘just’ one time!

Please also don’t engage in ‘the choking game’ otherwise called ‘space monkey’ or ‘the pass out game’ where the person puts something around their neck (or purposely hyperventilates) to cut off oxygen thus giving a cheap, quick high (as do inhalants) but can cause a stroke (‘brain attack’) and even death. Sorry, don’t mean to bore you with these warnings, but just wanted to give you a heads-up on some behaviors that may seem benign or innocuous but couldn’t be further from the truth.

Ok, I will fix some of those rumors and also CHILL OUT middle schools isn’t a big deal. I’m going to 8th grade this year so, I can help you. 1. No, you wont! You will make new friends, and the first day it’ll be hard finding seats to sit in lunch but you’ll be ok the rest of the days, and also you won’t get made fun all the time. I hardly did 6th grade is very easy. 2. Bathrooms, 7th grades don’t poop all over the toilets. Thats a lie, also every janitor has to clean the bathrooms every day after school so you’ll be fine. 3. Im gonna be a 8th grade this year, when I entered 6th grade no 7th or 8th grades bet us up they didn’t cared. I would stay on my side and not mess with them so can really go crazy some are nice like me and some are horrible. 4. Teachers, you won’t be MEAN! You would problaby get a strict teachers, the first week they’ll be super nice get on their good side and don’t get them mad cause they can give you a detention or a CSI ( worst then a detention) 5. No, you would get lost since its your first day but you won’t be lost for a hour just ask a teacher or a security guard like I did and you’ll be fine they teacher won’t mind you getting lost since its your first day. 6. Don’t worry the first few days will be scary, but you’ll get over it remember all the 6th grades are scared to your not the only one by the time you know it you wont be scared! I wish you good luck, this is a super easy year and remember study for quiz, finals, midterms and don’t believe andymore rumors.

It’s been a couple of weeks now and some things seem easier and some new things have popped up. Just remember that everything you are thinking and wondering about are the same things the boy or girl next to you is wondering about. Everyone has questions, everyone is unsure. Here’s a little example of something that helped my 6th grader this week.

I ran into a Mom at Open House who was telling me all the things her daughter was worried about – she didn’t know anyone yet, she was getting lost, she missed her old friends, she didn’t think people liked her and she wasn’t sure if she liked middle school. I told her my daughter was feeling the same way so, she asked me who my daughter was.

Come to find out they are in the same class and her daughter talks about mine and thinks she has so many friends and likes to be around her because she is fun, etc. She never would have guessed MY daughter felt the exact same way as hers. I asked my daughter about the girl in her class and she thought the same thing about her. Knowing everyone else was thinking the same things she was thinking really helped my daughter feel better about herself.

This tells you that the girl you sat next to at lunch today who seemed so fun and confident probably goes home at the end of the day with the same questions and concerns that you have – that we ALL had in middle school. Just remember to be yourself, treat others as you would want them to treat you and smile – those things are always easy to like.

Don’t worry about getting to class, your locker, etc – all of those things will come easily with a little time.

Good luck – keep smiling and you’ll do great!

“what to think” Think that it is a new adventure, that you will meet old friends, and make new friends, that you will be welcomed and that the teachers will be nice.

“I don’t know what to do” Get a good nights rest, have a good breakfast in the morning, wake up in plenty of time, take a shower, brush your teeth, comb your hair. and wear nice clothing.

“what to take” Take yourself, a smile on your face. a loose leaf notebook, a pen, two sharpened pencils. a ruler, and money for lunch.

“what to say” Say hello with the smile that you brought with you.

“what to write” write you class notes, your homework, any special instructions given by your teachers and the names of your new friends.

“what to think” Think how lucky you are to go to your news school and all the things that you will learn this year.

“where to go” There will probably be someone to direct you at the door or a sign telling you where to go. if not speak to the first adult that you see, tell them that this is your first day and that you need directions.

Good luck.

Just stay to yourself and be good and do your work. Try to smile so you can make friends with everyone.
