It definitely depends whether or not you particularly want to continue to study further about the film art & industry.

If you like to study in university about the film making and production fields, I’d recommend you major in any type of among Visual arts, Film studies, Media studies. The exact title of major can vary between schools. But what is more important than the title of major is what courses you take and what skills and knowledge you obtain from those courses. Be sure that the course you choose to take are focusing on the practical production processes (like recording, sound, filmmaking, etc) rather than acting or those film critiques.

I think the school you choose is as important as the major itself. Many schools have film departments, but the most prestigious ones will probably give you the best chance in a limited field after graduation. I recommend UCLA or Columbia University. Neither one is cheap, but if you have the resources (and the grades) either one is a good choice. If that’s not an option and the school you select does not have a film department, most schools have a theater and/or communications department. I’d start there. Public relations is actually a good option as well since a lot of what film directors to is make sure the actors show their best side to the world – basically public relations at a personal level. That’ll give you some of the basic skills you’ll need. I think that it is important to get a camera (a cheapie video camera will do) and just start filming stuff. You’ll be surprised how much you can learn just being behind a camera filming mundane life. It’s how a lot of independent directors started off. They didn’t have the bucks to go to film school and they learned by doing. My nephew is an aspiring film director just going into college and he video tapes everything. My uncle was a relatively unknown actor but he made a living doing lots of things behind the scenes too, electrical, sets, lighting, so I have a little insight into the film world.

you dont need any degree to become a film director…

to be in film you need to start at the bottom and work your way up (unless you have lots of connections).even then, film is a lot of work!! most people who go into film find it hard to make a living. but i guess it depends on how good you are and if you can make the right connections!

you can also go to film school and get a film degree. you would still need to start at the bottom when you are done, BUT you may meet a lot of people while you are in school!

goodluck! film is a wonderful and beautiful way of expressing yourself and making the world a better place.

Study the films of your favorite directors, over and over again until you know virtually every camera shot. Read scripts every chance you get. Learn to storyboard. Write a short (3-5 minutes) screenplay and shoot it. Learn how to operate a camera and editing equipment. Shoot a couple 15 minute films. If necessary take classes to meet the right people. Now you are ready. Good luck.
