Awwww =( I hated being called on in class, too. It sucks being put on the spot.

I used to try to make eye contact with the teacher and appear very attentive, and then when they asked a question, I would divert my eyes and scribble in my notebook. Ha.

Maybe you should become skilled in the art of providing bullsh** answers. =D

If I can tell that one of my students obviously knows the answer, I am less likely to call on them…because I know they already know it. Part of the reason that I call on students is to see what they know – not to embarrass them, but the only way I can help them is if I know where they are.

I do have a couple of students that I can tell work extremely hard, and I can tell by their homework and quiz scores that they have learned the material; however, they’re uncomfortable being called on, so I keep it to a minimum.

The students I make a point of calling on are the ones who divert their eyes, don’t make eye contact with me, and generally try to slink down in their chairs…these are the ones that probably need my help, but if I can’t tell what level of comprehension they’re at, I can’t help them. Hence, I call on them.

Hope that helps 🙂

(I have small classes, by the way, so I can do that. If you’re in a large class, chances are you’re going to get called on no matter what. Looking like you’re paying attention and following up with the work helps, though!)

Why do you wish to not be called on in class? That’s just part of being educated. If you don’t know the answer, make the best guess that you can. Think about it for a few seconds.

You might guess that I am a teacher myself. I try to make sure I call on everyone at least once during class.

You could try sitting towards the front of the room. In general, troublemakers and those who feel most unsure choose seats in the back and consequently get called on more often :D.

Also – and this depends on the layout of the classroom – the front corners can be quite a good bet to get overlooked because the teacher often has to turn to look at you since you aren’t in their direct vision.

It doesn’t happen. Teachers are encouraged to call on everyone. But, you can increase your chances of NOT being humiliated by studying, and making sure you have the answers when you are asked for them. I say that’s a good place to start.

What I do is to keep looking at the teacher and nod whenever he/she says something. Teachers feel the need to call on people that won’t know the answer, rather than ones who probably do.

act super smart so then the teacher would obviously call on someone else because they know you probably know it so for like 1 week or 2 try to answer all the questions so she will think you are smart unless you really are then you are ok
