To those of you with kids in Middle School/High School…how long of a break do your kids get between classes?

Do you feel that the time students are given to go to their lockers, use the restroom, and get to their next class is sufficient? From what I’m hearing, kids nowadays are holding their urine or feces all day, girls are overflowing their Kotex, and many are carrying around ALL of their books in a backpack (and never using their locker) because they are afraid of being tardy–which comes with consequences. I am concerned that they will end up with bowel or bladder problems (from not having time to use the restroom) and/or a disfigured back (from carrying such a heavy load). A rolling backpack isn’t an option because it “isn’t cool.”

Also, if you feel that a school needs to change their policy on the amount of time allowed between classes, would you approach the Board of Education individually or circulate a petition for parents to sign?

Well i’m in middle school and i have 3 minutes between. In my school the teachers do allow you to go to the bathroom right before class though so i drop off my books and then go. And normally if your locker is somewhat organized you can stop at your locker and still be on time. But that’s just at my school so it may be different at others.

I’m starting high school this year. At my junior high, we got 5 min between classes. In general, it was enough time. I always went to the bathroom once a day at lunch and I was fine. And most teachers would let you go during class, especially if you were a girl and it was an emergency lol. But lots of teachers had “potty passes” so you could only go 5 times during a semester, which I hated. And we weren’t allowed to go during homeroom (15 min) until the school announcements were over, which lasted the entire 15 min usually. I know that in high school, there’s about a 20 min break part way through the day for clubs, so I think lots of ppl go then. We also have 5 min to get to classes. But we have to share half sized lockers with 2 other people so most people just end up carrying their backpacks with them to all their classes cuz their lockers are out of the way and crowded. This really does suck since I know a whole bunch of high school athletes with back problems. But I even agree that 5 minutes isn’t always enough time. I think each passing period should be at least 7 minutes so you could go to the bathroom. Too bad school boards don’t really listen to that. As if 2 less minutes of class makes a big difference in what you learn in a year.

My son has 4 minutes between classes. Last year he was in 6th and all his classes except 1 were in the same hallway, so it was fine. There is only one level in his middle school, so it’s not that big. I think 4 minutes is long enough. Anything longer than that encourages improper conduct either at lockers or in the bathroom. As for bathroom breaks, my son has a book that has to come home every day for me to sign. Each day there are at least 2 bathroom outings, so I doubt his school is keeping kids from going. In my son’s school, you cannot carry a conventional backpack. You have to keep all your books in your locker and you can only carry books in a drawstring bag. This policy comes from the school feeling that backpacks loaded with books are bad for kids backs. However, my son has gone thru several of those drawstring packs because the books are too heavy and they rip, so tell me how this is helping their spines anymore than a larger one? At this time, I don’t feel time should be changed. I went to the high school here that my son will go to in a few years. We had 3 minutes between classes and this school was huge. Once you know where everything is, you should be able to make it in the time allotted.

My school has 4 minutes between classes, which is enough to get almost anywhere in the school except the locker rooms for gym class, and the drivers ed room, but those teachers know that the rooms are out of the way and don’t mind if you are a minute or two late.

If you have to go to the bathroom, there isn’t really enough time between classes, but if you get to class quickly then most teachers will let you go after you get there.

My locker is in the middle of the school, which is nice because I can go there almost anytime between classes and only ever have to carry 1-2 books at a time. However, some other people I know have lockers in much less convenient locations, where they can only go before school and during lunch, so they carry tons of books with them. One thing that helps with that is to get folders, instead of binders, to keep papers in, so you aren’t carrying more than is necessary.

The time between classes go ALOT deeper than you think. First off, each state determines how many minutes per year students will need to be in class. Then, you have the transportation department determine when you can begin and end your school day depending on their bus routes (remember, with most districts, busses will first pick up the elementary students and then the secondary students). Finally, in most teacher contracts, the amount of time that teachers will be in class teaching is written in the contract and cannot be violated. This usually determines how much “passing time” there are between classes.

This is probably a poor explination, but it hits the major areas. Students need to ask the teacher to use the rest room during class.

talk to the principle…

i’m a junior in high school and if i remember correctly both in middle school and high school we got 5 minutes between classes…and honestly it’s enough if you don’t stop and talk to friends…as far as rolling backpacks? it’s not that they aren’t “cool” it’s that they’re a hassle…people sometimes trip over them and it’s just irritating…people should be able to use their lockers too if they don’t then they should…i’m guessing you’re a parent so my suggestion to you is to maybe ask tell your kids to not necessarily have long conversations with their friend and hang around in the hallway i’m not saying they can’t talk to their friends but to have some time management and maybe get them watches too…that helped me a lot…otherwise you should also see if you and your kids can find a way around the school so that they can use their lockers…5 minutes is enough time…but then again i don’t about your kids schools….

hope this helped! and you may want to talk to the principle first and then go to the board of education or if there’s a parent group at school where they update you and stuff about school you can also go there…

edit: the thing with making it 10 min. is that they would have to extend the time they spend at school…i’m not sure but i think there’s a law for schools or something where they need to spend a certain amount of time in each class/at school..and i mean then they’ll just have even more problems and complaints about kids being in school for tooo long…

I’m in high school, and we get 5 minutes to get to class. There is not time to go to the bathroom in between, because many classes are clear across the school, and you have to go through a VERY crowded hallway to get there. The only way to go to the bathroom would be to go in class, and most teachers only allow 3-6 hallpasses for an entire semester.

It’s ridiculous.

My kids were given only a few (~5-8) minutes to get from one class to another. If they needed to use the bathroom, they used it before classes started or during lunch or got special permission to leave class. It was no big deal. I don’t recall lthem ever saying anything about not having enough time to get to lockers.

The only issue that might have kept them away from the bathrooms were the condition of the bathrooms. They were not kept very clean.

I’m not a parent, but, i remember my middle/high school days. In middle school we had like 4 minutes and high school 5 minutes. And depending on where your next class was it determined if you needed to take the books with you to your next class. And for going to the bathroom…forget it. Some teachers would let you go, but others would say “you have time between classes to do that”. Not if you have a few minutes, and have to change your tampon.

I think they should allow like 10 minutes between classes. That would let people use the bathroom and get their books instead of hauling them around with you.

i just started high school on wednsday, we get 5 minutes between classes. My locker is on the first floor and all my classes are on the 3rd floor, after my first day I realized i didnt have enough time to go to my locker after every period so i just carry my backpack around everywhere, its startin to get heavy as i get my books, and i pulled somethin in my back on friday after i got books from three straight classes. Personallly i would to scared to go to the school board, but if i can get enough student support and adult support i would go.
