Private school VS Public school. Facts?

I am researching schools for my son, who is going to be entering elementary school soon.

He goes to a private Christian pre-school, because I work there. I was wondering if I should keep with the private schools, or send him to public school.

I went to both. Private until 4th grade, public until 10th grade…. Then I dropped out– thats another story *sad face*

Anyway, I am asking about facts. Public schools vs Private schools.

Thanks!

Where in Los Angeles do you live? I’m from LA. Technically, I’m from a suburb. However, like most people who live here, I say I live in Los Angeles even tho most people in SoCal don’t actually live in the city of Los Angeles.

My point is that it’s highly dependent on what schools are available. If your public school is decent, then let him go to the public. College is going to be expensive enough.

I went to both just like you. I’m sending my kids to public schools if they’re decent enough. My wife and I both went to premier academic public high schools. Hers had great facilities. Mine sucked, but I still thought I got a great education despite the poor facilities and equipment.

Look up the STAR results for the local public school. If it’s 800+, I say just send him to the public. For below high school, I’d say 730+ is decent enough to send him to the public one.

In a lot of cases it depends on the area that you live in. I also have attend both private and public schools and i like public schools way better. In the private school that i went to, Maybe 9 out of 25 teachers were certified to teach the subject they were teaching. We had a counselor with the wrong degree, a religion teacher with no degree, and an English teacher with a masters in business. And i didn’t really like the small classes and less credits. In my public school the classes are more challenging. They offer CP, Honors, or AP. The teachers all have a masters or better for the subject that they are teaching. Its a more diverse environment, and its one of the top public schools in the state. So you really have to look at the school, not just the facility but the teachers and student and determine from that whether you want you son to stay at private school or go to public school.

Unfortunately, there is not pat answer to your question.

Schools differ greatly from area to area. Schools differ greatly even within the same school district.

In general public schools due to their size and other factors may offer more types of classes and extra-curricular activities.

Private schools frequently have more parental involvement and better discipline and often take more of an interest in each child.

I suggest that you visit and speak to the parents of each school that you are considering. You may even know a teacher or two at each school. Every public school is supposed to issue a report card summarizing many things about the school. Ask for it at the school or see it on line. Find out about teacher turnover and how the school does in the required testing under the No Child Left Behind Legislation.

It is good that you are concerned about placement. If one type of school does not work out for some reason you should be able to transfer your child.

Really, I think that this could go either way. How good is the public school that he would go to? Some public schools are great and give good educations to all of the students. However, some aren’t that great. I would recommend visiting the public school that he would go to, as well as some private schools. I hope I helped!

There are some great public schools, but I’ve heard horror stories as well. Check out how your public school ranks, visit in, check out ratemyteacher.com to see what students think of the teachers and get a general over view of the public school system. If it meets your standards then go with public, if not and you have the money for it go with private

Well, I went to public up until high school when I switched to an academic crazy private high school. My highschool is ultra competitive and this was all new to me since I had never taken interests in academics at public schools. This however was a great thing that made me conscious of where i was at and helped me prioritize my goals. I am now doing exceptionally well at this high school and love it. Also, I have noticed from inquiry that private schools have students take sats since 5th grade. I also learned that most of them had a class dedicated to logic in middle school. In addition private schools, since they are smaller, have more one on one between teacher and student ,which serves as a catalyst to the learning progress.

I can’t give you statistical facts…but in our area it seems more and more parents are switching to private.

My daughter has gone to private since pre-k…she did 3rd and 4th in public…3rd grade she came in 2nd in a school wide math quiz…end of 4th she was 2 years behind…and the kids were talking about dating and dressing like MTV…

Now she is going into the 8th grade, because of rising tuition costs she had to make a choice go to public school or home school….she has plenty of nice friends that are in public school through soccer, art classes, etc….but she sees the kids that aren’t like them and has chosen not to have to deal with all that mess.

Needless to say she is outgoing, intellegent and well rounded…which are the main points of people against private school.

Hope this helped…

He’ll receive better attention in a smaller classroom in a private school.Give him the opportunity to go to private school and if he doesn’t like it let him go to public school.

I attend a private boarding school. The education is much better, but also a lot more expensive. My Dad is paying over $40,000 a year to send me to a boarding school. That’s something to think about.
