the verb has two kinds of voice- active and passive. verb is in active voice when the doer of the action is the subject in the sentence (e.g., Martha closed the door.). but when the receiver of the action, or the object, becomes the subject (e.g., The door was closed by Martha.), it is now said to be in the passive voice.

In a passive sentence, the agent (doer of the action) comes after the verb, while the patient (the object on which the action is done) comes after the verb. Compare the following two sentences:

Active: Susan hit the ball.

Passive: The ball was hit by Susan.

“Susan” is the entity doing the hitting, and so is first in the active sentence, and last in the passive sentence. Vice versa for the ball, the thing which receives the hitting action.

Passive voice is when the subject does not do the action but an action is done upon it. It doesn’t matter which goes first. You have to read the sentence and get the thought. Knowing the subject is the main key here.

For example:

The ball is being dribbled by Timmy.

The subject here is ‘ball’. We know it’s in PASSIVE voice since the “ball” doesn’t do the action, but an action is done to it, which in this case is “being dribbled.”

Hope that helps! God bless.

Good answers. I might add my opinion that too many sentences one after another in the active voice get too stoccatto and therefor a few passive voice sentences help break up the tone.

Object goes last.

For example:

Active Voice: The boy ate the cake. (subject + v + object)

Passive: The cake was eaten by the boy. (object + v + subject)

She was hit by a bus.

Object first, then action, followed by doer.
