Nursing students: What methods did you use to memorize everything?

I’m in school for nursing and all this information to remember is overwhelming. For those who have already gone or is going through school, what methods did you use to pass your classes. Everyone has said flash cards but are there other secrets?? Just curious, thanks

I am soo glad I finally finished nursing school. It was horrible.

But I realized that you can’t memorize every single detail. I mean it was hard enough reading all the chapters. What I did was read the chapters I could, hilight general concepts in my book. I used those book flags to keep pages marked. I would often review the questions at the end of every chapter and I would use my study guides to answer those questions. Also, your computer can be your best friend. Use it to keep info straight. Use powerpoint presentations, look up stuff on the web espcially animations to make things clearer.

I used to pretend I was teaching a class and I would review concepts outloud asking my “class” questions and then explaing the answers. I was dorky but it worked.

Always review contents twice.

I guess the bottom line is

1. Use multicolored hilighters

2. Use book flags

3. Use your resources like your book CD, study guides, powerpoints, etc.

4. Review questions often. At least 4-5x a week.

5. Find out it study groups can help you if so join one.

6. Learn general concepts first. Break things down…learn patho, learn the tests, learn the treatments, etc.

7. Remember you cannot commit everything to memory. Learn what you can and be able to apply general concepts.

8. Use NCLEX books to study from as well…they are so helpful in school as well as when studying for the NCLEX specifically.

Good Luck! It can be done…

I always used mnemonics when I was in nursing school. You know like how you did when you learned the planets? My Very Eager Mother Just Sent Us Nine Pizzas? Or the Roman numeral one , Little Cats Drink Milk? You can make it anything you want , the crazier the better because it’s easier to remember. It works great for ANYTHING you need to memorize.. I found this link on a quick search, I don’t know if it will be of any help, but it looks like it could be awesome. http://www.medicalmnemonics.com/

Good luck!!

I am a Certified Pharmacy Tech and I have worked with Nurses in my profession for 17 years. Being a pharmacy tech and trying to remember all the medications and their generics etc. was also overwhelming. I know nursing is too. For me, I had to write down what I read. Flash cards of course help, but for me, I read, and by writing down important facts that I read helped as well because it was like I was doing double duty for memory.

I know there are a lot of things you have to remember from the book for your career, but you will also find that what you learned in school is different from the experience itself. Once you pass your test, and you will; by working and doing the routine repetitively, you will learn a great deal as well.

Have someone help you study by having them mention off some illnesses, and you describe the symptoms, or vice versa. And do that with other information as well. Name off generics while they name off brand names. Of course there are meds out there that just have one name only because of multiple ingredients, but this is a great way of practicing. Writing down what you read, and practice with someone.

Hope this helps. πŸ™‚ Good luck on your test. Take deep breaths when you take your test. Don’t panic or your mind will go blank.

It takes someone special like you to go for a career like this you know. Not everyone can be brave enough to be in charge of someone else’s life. Kudos to you! πŸ™‚

Flash cards is a great way to memorize things, Also spider diagrams are very helpful. The best thing to do is, as soon as your lessons are over what ever you covered that day, revise it that night. This can be just sitting and reading over it again. One thing i do is imagine a situation were you would have to use what your learning to help someone, and they ways in which you would do it. Hope this helps you! πŸ™‚

Like others have said, just memorizing the information is no good, as you’ll flounder WHEN you qualify and be expected to know it all!

What worked for me, although I appreciate it sounds odd… but I studied listening (quietly) to music One album for psychology, different band album for anatomy, another one for physiology and so on and so forth!

Then, when you get stuck, you sing the songs in your head and it all comes back!!

I appreciate that you’ll also need to be a big music fan for this to work. Otherwise, just read until you understand. :o)

flashcards are one of the best ways actually. I would color-code mine for each system. If you are having trouble with that try to re-write your notes or make a flow chart (thats how I learned how the blood pumps through the heart). Ummm maybe try getting together with friends and quiz each other back and forth and after giving your answer, provide reasoning on why you chose that answer. good luck!

I know that you’ve probably heard this before but you better learn it and not memorize it. Remeber. You have to take a state board test on this stuff later. This isn’t the kind of stuff you can learn just for your next test.

there is NO better method. No matter what you use. All you do is study in a quiet place & CONCENTRATE on what your memorizing, read it over & over till you get it in your head.
