Nephew with ADD started kindergarten this year?

Nephew with ADD started kindergarten this year. Hes having difficulty staying on task, and keeping his hands..

to himself. The school is already threatening to suspend him after only 2 weeks of school. Hes on medication for the ADD although it doesnt seem to be helping much.

Weve tried taking away privledges as a punishment for bad behavior. We have also tried a reward system for every 5 good days at school he gets a new game etc. So far nothing has phased him.

He has chronic maladjustment disorder and ADD and is in the middle of switching doctors.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to help him adjust to the school? Thanks!

I have a step son that has ADHD and I know your story and frustration all too well. Now days most schools will use behavior modification techniques to assist children with special needs. Some schools have occupational therapists who are willing to intervein and offer suggestions. Our school has special ed teachers that come into the classroom and work with individual children one on one. Sometimes sensory aids are helpful ~ (weights that drape over the legs, flexible vibrating/pulsating massagers, bean bag “buttons” with nubbies on them placed on the childs chair, etc..) I would reccomend that the childs mother speak with the head of the school board to see what kind of options and resources are available to her and her child. A change in his medication or doses could be the answer. One other thing that we found out that she may or may not already know ~ Something you may want to run by the childs Mother ~ Children with ADHD are very sensitive to certain dyes used in fruit juices, candy, kool aid, jello, childrens chewable vitamins, and things of the like. This was one of the hidden secerets that my step sons phychiatrist told us about increased hyper activity levels.. We were amazed to see how much less hyper my step son was after we changed his diet and took him off of the Flinstones vitamins. Seriously. It sounds crazy, but it’s the Gods honest truth! Couldn’t hurt to change his diet some and moniter him for changes. I wish your nephew and his parents the best of luck. Tell them to hang in there. Things will get better.

I hope this helps.

PS. I forgot to ask you ~ Does your nephew go to school all day or half a day? If he’s going all day long and if the school offers a half a day program, it may be wise to start him off slow and work him up to a full day gradually. Our school offers both full day and half a day classes for Kindergarteners but because if the circiruculum (spelling?) requiremnets, they kinda frown on a long term half a day program. Something else to think about and consider.
