Kindergarten Curriculum?

I rencently moved to a new town. My daughter was in pre-k and did wonderful. She was head of her class and was fast on her way to reading. The new school’s curriculum is unfamiliar and I am having problems understanding some of its elements, such as why they would teach the children inventive spelling, the D’nealian alphabet and some math method called Wynroth? I know I was not the only parent befuddled by the curriculum. Does anyone know if these methods are now the accepted norm, please let me know that I didn’t make a huge mistake in moving. I looked into the school and it is ranked 8th in my state so that is pretty good. I am just having trouble understanding why this would be the accepted method in one school in the state and not in all the schools in my state?

I read your question because my daughter just started kindergarden too. Inventive spelling is often used in lower grades. It just means that sometimes they ask my daughter to try to write a word she hasn’t learned yet. She just turned 5 so drink sometimes comes out ‘dkr’. She learns how to sound things out this way and gets to ‘write’ before she learns very many words. This is in addition to learning words the ‘old fashioned way’. D’nealian is just a specific handwriting method. I don’t know why they told the parents the name. I had to look it up. I think it is designed so that cursive is easier eventually. I couldn’t find wynroth. But I would expect it is similarly just a method for math games. I doubt it is a ‘new math’.

I think some schools tend to use jargon more than others. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. just look at the work coming home and i bet it will all be reasonable.
