Is the IB program worth it?

I am now officially in the IB program but have been chosen along with 100 other students to be in the pre-IB program in 9thgrade. I have been having a hard time to adjust in the 9th and 10th grade, but now that im in it officially, i think that getting the IB diploma and a somewhat high GPA is not worth it b/c i think that colleges dont really acknowledges it. when i look at my middle school friends classes and work its so easy and so much less stressful. would it be better to drop IB and just get a 4.0 in a easy class or 3.5~ or lower in the IB program?

I had to read the odyssey in the beginnin of 9th grade (i died then)

NO!!! Don’t let ANY parents, teachers, counsellors talk you into it. GET OUT AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!! I took IB in Grade 11 (IB diploma schedule) and Grade 12 (dropped down to IB certicate), but at the end of it, all IB turned out to be was a whole bunch of homework, extended essays, world lit papers, group 4 projects, field studies, taped commentaries, VERY stressful and difficult IB exams, and a whole bunch of international-level bitching from teachers for not getting all this crap done on time. In Grade 12 when I applied for university, the only marks that got sent in were my grade 12 class and provincial exam marks, because the IB marks were NOWHERE CLOSE to getting me into a good university, much less a scholarship. So, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don’t go into IB, live a little and enjoy high school, and focus on getting good grades in regular classes, and most of all, study hard for final exams in Grade 12. They will make or break your application for university.

Let me just say, that I’ve been to some college presentations and a lot said that they looked specifically for challenging classes, and that they’d prefer a lower grade in a harder class to a higher grade in an easy class. However, this may not apply in all situations. Don’t intentionally take a class that you know you are going to barely pass. One college presenter said

“We’d rather see a B in a hard class than an A in an easy class.”

However, if you know you are going to get a D in an IB class, don’t take it. You don’t have to be full IB to be in the program.

I’m in the IB program, and I’m going for the full IB diploma, but a friend of mine is taking IB English and IB Film Studies and all other classes on a standard level. However, she did take Pre-IB classes.

And every college that we’ve asked about the IB program has praised it and said that they do recognize it.

And here’s a little-known fact- The IB program lets you apply to colleges all over the world. The program was originally made so people would have a common program recognized by all colleges.

So all in all, it depends on you.

Also, here’s my advice: stick with the Pre-IB classes at the least. It’ll prepare you to make the choice on whether you want to take the actual IB classes.

And yes, high school is supposed to be a time to enjoy. But don’t do anything that might harm your future. The work may be a change from middle school, but you’ll get used to it.

Stay with Pre-Ib and learn what you want to do from that.

IB Program definitely not worth it to the average student. As someone in full IB, all I do is project after project after project. Even in my theater class I’m not learning anything about acting. Why? Because the only **** we do are IB projects and we have no time to do anything else. Honestly, the only time IB is worth it is when you want to study at a prestigious college, such as the Ivy League. Even then you’re student loans are going to eat all of your money away. At first, I was under the impression that IB will get me into a good college for sure, but honestly you don’t need full IB for a good college education. Also, if you are intent on doing the IB program, you should RESEARCH what college you want to go to and what future occupation you would like prior to joining the program. Since I was one of those students who took honors classes in elementary school, I went into the IB program without thinking. However, after researching what colleges have the best facility for someone who wants to be a zoologist, I found out that the college right for me has a 99% acceptance rate. That **** right there makes it completely useless for me to take IB.

Long story short:
IB is nothing but projects
IB isn’t going to guarantee you a spot in a good college
Research what college has the best facility for your future job before committing to this b.s.

I’m currently an IB student (Grade 11). Yes, the IB Program is very rigorous… in my school in Grade 9 Pre-IB, there were 119 students, and now, it’s been reduced to half that number. Most people I know who have graduated from the IB Program haven’t gone to universities/colleges that acknowledge the program; however, IB is still one of the best ways to prepare for post-secondary education. Even if your university won’t acknowledge it, you will be so much ahead of your other classmates when you enter first-year university. In addition, when most of your marks are sent off to the university, teachers modify the marks so that it fits the standard curriculum marking system. And it’s definitely possible to maintain a high GPA in the IB Program. Furthermore, the competition and requirements such as CAS can be helpful when applying for scholarships. But if you’re not ready to work hard(er than most regular students), then perhaps IB might not be the right program. If you can handle the workload, it would be in no way a disadvantage.

IB is too skills-focused. If you have built up knowledge over the years, you’ll find that IB is not going to help you gain more. In fact, there’s no continuum. Its good if you are intending to study anything that has no relevance to the knowledge you’ve gotten since elementary school, because then all you need is the skills developed from IB (plus the 8 key concepts) to help you through. Just to let you know, Top post-secondary schools in Singapore are not allowed to take IB.

I am currently in the IB program and was brainwashed into thinking that it would benefit me in the future by my school. It is significantly harder than any other program and only half as recognized. It is so much stress and extra work and kids that go to public schools or are in different programs end up going to the same universities so the entire idea of it is stupid. They “prepare” you but in reality they prepare you to address essays/questions etc the way the IB wants it which is pointless when you leave high-school. Get out as fast as you can, it is a waste of money, time and mental health.

to be honest. No it really isn t. Im a student here in Colorado with IB classes, and i cant help but stress over how useless it is. infact today ive made my descision that it really isnt helping me. my grades havent improved. theye staed the same and im working twice as hard. i never have time to do anything. i have a job but even then the entire IB thing isnt going to help you in the long run. yes maybe itll prepare you for studying a rigoriuse course like in college yet it doenst help your mental or physical help. The stres you go throuhg is insane. too many IB papers or IA s. too many Written Tasks, and so much of this bull ****. trust me. its not worth it. Let me be straight. the only reason that any student does this program is for themselves. this is a warning. when you enter the classroom there are litterally a pile of books on your desk. a list of what you need to do and a teacher that doesnt care about you. so unless your willing to sacrifice yourelf, your time and your health. i suggest you really think about what you are doing.

What is a college going to think when it sees on your transcript that you dropped out of the program? It doesn’t say much about your willingness or ability to do hard work if you quit. Also, colleges look to see what you’re taking, and the IB is the most impressive course load you can take. If your school offers it, and you don’t take it, you are saying that you are not willing to do the highest level of work. It isn’t just the score you receive; it’s showing that you are willing to put forth the effort.

For forgeiners yes ,but for Indians no!!!!!!
Ib is just useless for us. We have cbse and state boards to get into indian engineering colleges and ISC to get into abroad universities. Trust me, IB is just hyped. Whatever I did in icse class 8 was there in IB class 11. Some people who are in IB simply hyped it so that it looks tough and looks like they are busting their *** for doing small things. The truth is that they are just relaxing . As I said ,Indians who want to go abroad can just go to an isc school than waste money for the wasteful IB program
