Does he do this at home? Have you ever seen him do it? Sometimes children rock when they are anxious or upset or stressed. Is your son worried about anything?

Since this behavior has been noticed and pointed out by your son’s teacher, you may want to look at it more closely. Maybe ask your doctor about it and see what he/she says. Sometimes rocking behavior in children is an indication of something that needs to be addressed. This site will give you a little information. Best of luck.

He’s 7 years old and he’s getting a little wiggly. Seven year olds do that, they do not sit well long. I am a first grade teacher. I NEVER allow (yes I make them get up) my students to sit more than 20-30 minutes. That’s just too long for their little bodies to sit still. Just because he wiggles doesn’t mean he’s not paying attention. I have plenty who wiggle (probably 1/2 of them) and they are actively involved in what we are doing and talking about. I even have children who stand because they just work better that way. Everyone is different.

I would suggest to do a bit of research on boys in education. Traditional education is set up completely against how most boys (and a few girls) learn. I would look into these. Try a few of these things at home and see how well they work (I truly believe them for all children and even adults). Then politely tell the teacher “We have learned that __________, works well, or sometimes __________ helps.”

If he is actually tipping his chair I would be concerned for his safety. The teacher should be able to handle this, but if not just tell her to take the chair away from him (it wont hurt your feelings-especially if the alternative is him flipping over and smacking his head on the floor…I have seen it, its not fun at all. Its very scary.). I do this with my “tippers” for about an hour or so, it usually works.

Good luck.

My son is 12 years old and teachers have always told me how extremely bright my son is and the truth is he is very selfmotivated and intelligent. He is a rocker. He sits in his chair/ desk at
school and rocks. I just read that Bill Gates is a “rocker”. The more he is thinking the more he rocks. I would say that is good company. I work with special needs students who may also have behavior disorders. It’s always good to follow up with a pediatrician, but there also may be no reason for concern. Good luck!

I used to do this as a child. It can be a symptom of ADHD, but not always… some people (kids) just need to constantly be moving… I recently read that they are also the ones who tend not to have a weight problem because they’re always burning extra energy by moving all the time! In any case, he can’t rock his chair as he might tip over… but if he has been checked for ADHD and he doesn’t meet the criteria, I’m not sure what you can do about it. (I still tap my foot when I’m sitting, until someone notices and tells me to stop 😉 ). My advice would be to consult his doctor. Good luck.

It could be because he is bored and if he is bored then he could be more advanced than the what the teacher is doing at the time.

First watch and see if he does this at home and if he does, watch and see when it happens (during tv, at the table ect) and maybe you can relate it to something specific.

My daughter did that and the teacher went on and on about her being ADD but when given test, it showed that she was very advanced for her class.

Well, I rock in my chair all the time, it actually calms me down and HELPS me focus. It’s very soothing for me, and probably for your son too. I’m no doc, but I’m just trying to share some insight, and why I do it… Maybe he does it for the same reason I do.

I get nervous

I can’t focus

I am stressed out

I feel depressed (He probably doesn’t)

etc, stuff like that. He probably does it for many reasons, idk, ask him. =) I don’t think it’s too serious.

It could be any number of things. He may do it to soothe himself, do it because he’s nervous or antsy, maybe he needs to use the lav. You should ask him why he does it 1st and see if he has any kind of answer – which he may not. You may also want to talk to his doctor and see what he says.

if he is having problems learnign maybe the curriculim is not challenging enough or he is just concentrating? I sometimes find myself rocking a little bit when I am engrossed in something when sitting like being on this computer.

to me that means my nervous system is in overdrive in my work I am doing.it is like removing excess energy.

He just might be bored. He might be distracted. He may have to go to the bathroom. Does he rock at home?

he’s most likely bored in class if he does that and rocking the chair isn’t that big of deal
