My boyfriend’s son is WAY behind his grade level, how did he get promoted to the next grade?

He is 13, but reads/writes at a 2nd or 3rd grade level. He also has emotional and behavioral problems, acting like a much younger child, and has been violent. How did he get promoted to the next grade? Do schools just pass kids to get rid of them?? I am not trying to be funny or mean, I just dont understand this. He does have an IEP.I almost stayed back because we moved so many times when I was in school.

Since the no child left behind law went into effect, they will feed a child the material he needs to pass a test. I have noticed how schools will stop teaching the subject matter in the books to teach what the kids need to know to pass the tests. I know exactly what you mean though. These are the kids who will be running our country when we are old, it’s a scary thought! =)

Social promotion.

Yes, schools pass them on to be rid of them. Mostly it’s because they feel there’s nothing more they can do. Speds (Special Ed. kids) burn you out. They are time consuming and slow to show positive results, if they ever do. It’s good he has an IEP, so somebody is paying attention to him.

I’m not surprised at what’s happened. The school is loathe to leave him with younger kids if they don’t pass him along, as his violent behavior may result in a lawsuit, which school districts almost always lose, anyway. . . .

i could get her tutoring over the summer season. the faculty district could also have a catalogue of individuals who coach, or are in a position to offer a coach for her. In arithmetic, if she drills on the innovations, then which will make each and every of the adaptation. If conceivable, the coach ought to omit why each and every step works. component to the concern with CAPD would properly be listening to training while there is historic past noise, or different sensory stimuli, so one-on-one tutoring over the summer season would properly be only what your daughter needs. yet another situation would be her information of the learning, and the quantity of prepare she has been in a position to get. while a classification is going onto a clean subject count number, to maintain %. with the curriculum, this would consequence on your daughter’s no longer getting the repeated drill she needs, extremely in arithmetic. lower back, one-on-one tutoring could make a extensive distinction. it could additionally help if she has emotions of frustration from no longer getting her questions responded, and then, she would be in a position to sense much less demanding, which in turn will help her succeed. on the top of the summer season, you could continuously make the selection to hold her back in case you nonetheless think of that’s right to do. because of the fact many pupils won’t have studied over the summer season, they are in a position to have forgotten lots. Tutoring will help your daughter remember what she has those days found out while the tutorial 3 hundred and sixty 5 days starts off lower back, so as which will counter-stability her being in the back of on the 2d. i’ve got confidence that protecting her friends is definitely substantial. once you’re distinctive, this is annoying to make friends interior the 1st place, and sense extremely badly to be new while the different pupils have generally happening human beings for years. shifting her to a clean college will certainly reason this, whether she isn’t held back. in case you’re able to desire to go her besides, then preserving her back won’t count number, yet i would not circulate her to hold her back if she will stay interior a similar classification together with her friends. you probably did no longer say if she is in the back of in different subjects to boot arithmetic, however the advantages of one-on-one education are super in different subjects, too.

The very sad truth is that yes, some schools and teachers, will promote a kid to the next grade just to get rid of them…

I think that is a VERY sad state-of-affairs to give up and then reward a child with promotion who does not DESERVE it…has not made the grades to support it, and is in obvious need of some kind of help, both emotionally and with school.

I sincerely HOPE that some WONDERFUL teacher sees this young man for who he :”is” and helps him in some way…if he is continually rewarded for little or no effort in school…he’ll have a REALLY TOUGH time in the adult world to find out that that kind of behavior is NOT tolerated…

I hope you have the strength to maybe go to someone on his behalf (BUT…I CAUTION you to do so without his knowledge, and make sure the adult understands UP-FRONT that you wish to remain anonomous…otherwise this young man could get quite angry with you)…and get someone to “open” their eyes to what is happening..

Things like this are always so sad to me, and they also make me angry….

Can’t speak for every state in the union, but here in Michigan the law says you can only hold a child back one time. After that they get promoted every year whether they should be or not. The children here know this, so once they get held back their one time they know they don’t have to bother because they’ll get promoted no matter what happens.

Yes, schools frequently promote students just to get rid of them. It’s called “social promotion” and is hardly a new phenomenon.
