How old do you have to be to be considered dependant by the department of education?

I was going to apply for financial aid, and I was wondering how old you have to be to be considered dependay byt the Department of Education. I think that it is like 24 or something, but I’m not sure.

24. To be delclared independant for the aid year 2007-2008, your birthday will have to be before Jan 1, 1984, and for the 2008-2009 year that begins in July 1, 2008, your birthday will have to be before Jan1. 1985. There are other factors that can determine your dependant status. If you are married, have children, have a qualifying dependant, are active duty military, are a veteran, both parents deceased, or if you pursue a graduate or masters degree, you will also be considered independant.

Yes. being over 24 will make you independent. As will having children that you provide more than half of their support, being married, being an orphan or a ward of the court or a veteran or having a bachelors degree.

Here is a good publication about fin aid.
