The population of a town decreased 10% in a 5−year period. If the original population was 8,000, what was the population at the end of the period?

10% of 8000= 800 (lost)

8000-800=7200

Well 100% is 8000 people. You need to reduce that by 10% which would be 90% of 8000. Take 8000 x .9 and that will give you the answer. Or you can take 8000 and find out what 10% is by multiplying by .1 and then subtract that answer from 8000. I think it is easier to find 90%.

7200-720=6480

6480-648=5832
