going to pimary school?

I came across this ‘Answers’ page for the first time last week, while i was supposed to be studying at work!!! I couldn’t resist checking the page every few minutes to have a look at some of the questions and the answers, i had trouble trying not to laugh sometimes!!! So I’ve logged on as a member today, and have a question of my own…

My daughter is going to be 4 years old in October. She will start school next September 2008. Does anyone know how do i start applying for her to join a school and when?? Is it a case of phoning the local schools for an ‘application form’ for her??

Most public schools in the US hold kindergarten registration in the spring. Call your school district office in March to find out when they will be opening registration. Many schools will have a “roundup” date (in April or May) where they may have teachers, nurses, and perhaps the county health van available. They will also have information available about PTA, dress code, lunch costs, and anything else that will be important.

In order to register, you will need a copy of your daughter’s birth certificate (a certified copy from the state of birth, not the pretty one from the hospital–usually costs $5 or so), health records showing a recent physical and up to date shot records (that is why the county health van may be at the roundup). You will also need proof of residency (usually a recent utility bill with your name and address on it) and your driver’s license or other form of identification. You can register during this roundup or at any time before school starts. If your child will be riding a bus, the sooner you get her registered the sooner she will be assigned to a bus and the sooner you will know what supplies she will need.

If you don’t know which attendance zone you live in, call the school board and they will tell you; the schools also have attendance maps available during the roundup. If your child attends a daycare and will continue to attend daycare after the kindergarten day, make sure there are arrangements made for her to be picked up before the first day of school.

If you are considering a private school, call them now and ask them for their procedure for registering. Some have waiting lists and it would be good to get on the waiting list as soon as possible. You will need the information listed above except for the proof of residency.

It may depend on where you live. In Canada, you would apply in April of 2008. You call the school and they send you the paper work. Make sure her shots are up to date. You will need proof that she has had the proper shots before they will accept her.
