Education Question?

The school has my son reading a book about a Totaltarian Government in the Future where each family is only allowed 2 children. The story is about the 3rd child and how he can’t leave the house. Then the teacher asks him what he would do if he were this “3rd” child. Is that Academics? I don’t think so.

I think it is bull!

I see it as something to be learned, here. The what ifs of the future can be very intriguing. I don’t understand why you object to this. The teacher is trying to ‘problem solve’ with the class. Teacher is teaching how a totalitarian govt. is a dangerous thing………and that we should all be aware of what govt. does and where it is headed.

Well it seems to me the teacher is just trying to open the students eyes to others perspectives. Asking a child how they would feel if they were the “3rd” child is not cruel or wrong. Education is about discussing issues and opening peoples minds. The teacher may have a larger purpose for this assignment. If you still have a problem with it I would consider contacting the teacher and tell her how you feel. Parent-teacher communication if important.

I think creative thought is very important rather than learning formulas and to obey rules blindly.

This story may spur your son to write, read more, consider other solutions to a problem, and be a more complete person.

Think about America’s advantage in the world. Anyone can make things, but few can create new solutions. The Japanese are wonderful at manufacturing, but it is just what Americans created with their creative minds.

Of course it’s academics! He’s actually reading an award winning book. I studied it in college for a children’s literature class. It asks very important questions about intolerance, over-population, government, and other relevant issues. Especially, in thie world’s current climate.

It’s a history lesson and an English lesson all in one. She is also asking him to think critically. Since most of us, as affluent citizens, have never experienced this kind of teatment. Asking a child to consider it really teaches them something about themselves.

sounds like could be a lesson in ethics….you didn’t mention what grade your son is in….depending on the school, the curriculum and so on, it could be part of the lesson plan and the teacher had no choice but to read that story.

Is this teacher following a lesson plan provided by the school or is this something she is coming up with on her own? Ask her why this is relavent.

What’s wrong with that? I think the teacher was probably trying to get him to see the world through the perspective of somebody less fortunate.

Academics is more than also blindly learning math equations that serve seemingly no purpose.
