Does this seem realistic?!!!?

Ok, I’m a junior in high school and I’m taking Honors PreCalculus… everybody in my classes thinks the grading is ridiculous, do we have reason to?? Our grades our weighted and broken down like this:

Homework = 25% of grade

Tests/Quizzes = 75% of grade

Is that fair AT ALL to have ALL tests and quizzes count that much?! I mean, the FIRST time we’re assessed on anything, its 3/4 of our grade!

GAHHH its so frustrating… I’d love your imput. Are we really crazy for being upset?

The formula for grading that you mentioned is typical for the way they grade students in college. In fact, I recall having taken courses in college where the final grade was determined by the average of just a mid-term exam and a final exam. YIKES! We had to wait all the way until the mid-term exam results came out just to see how well we were doing!

It sounds like your teacher is preparing you for how you can expect to be graded in college. It’s better to get used to it now than have it be a big surprise later on! Good luck!

I was in AP Calculus in high school and ours were weighted the same way, I didn’t like it b/c homework counted too much.

I think it is about a standard in math.

that seems pretty decent…my junior year math class was 10% homework, 90% quizzes and tests.

and i got an A all 4 quarters! =)

I think it’s fair. When I was at school homework never counted towards your grade….it was all calculated on exams!

in a way it is… the tests show how much you’ve learned, and remembered. your homework could have been done by anyone, or downloaded from the net…. it is frustrating, i know, but it’s the best way to see how much you know
