Do you think its appropriate for a teacher?

Do you feel its appropriate to grab a child by the arm and yank them off of the floor were they are sitting….and if so in what circumstances? I am wondering because this happened to my first Grader friday, I am so mad about it, I do not know if I should bring it to the principals attention or not… By the way all he was doing was talking, Which we repromanded (spelling error i know)him for at home

I teach 2nd grade. The ONLY situation where I would yank a child is if the child were in danger of being harmed or about to do terrible harm to someone and needed to be moved quickly. Go to the school and get to the bottom of this.

I feel that you should first bring this up to the teacher in question. This way you could get all of the facts regarding the situation. If you are just getting the story from your first grader then naturally children tend to embellish things and would never reveal something that would get them in more trouble. As you said “all he was doing was talking”, I am sure there is more to the story than this and it would be good to get all of the facts before taking the situation to a higher authority.

I would never deem it appropriate for an adult to harm a child, however there does need to be discipline within a classroom.

Reprimanding your son at home has different effects than the teacher disciplining him the moment that it happens. If the teacher ignored the situation in the classroom, then other students would attempt to do the same thing and soon the teacher could lose control of the entire class.

Again, I do not agree that the teacher should have grabbed the child and “yank” them in any manner. But I definitely feel that you should schedule a meeting with the teacher to discuss what happened and your concerns on how the situation was handled before taking it to the next level.

You need to go to the principal now. A teacher never has a right to put hands on a child unless it is to pull them out of the way of a moving bus….. I don’t care what the child is doing. You have every right to be angry, and I would bring it to the attention of the school loudly. I would also let them know you have every right to press charges against the teacher and may consider it. I am not saying you will, just to let them know how inappropriate it was. Then make them change teachers. Your child wont have a fair chance in the class after wards.

I would give the teacher the benefit of the doubt. Put yourself in her shoes…maybe your little guy had been talking talking talking, and she finally had had enough. Or maybe there was general chatter constantly, and your kiddo got to be the example. Is your information coming from your son, or the teacher, or were you there to see with your own eyes? Unfortunately, all too often, a child will exaggerate a teachers response in discipline and play innocent victim, testing the power of the teacher and whether you support the system, if no harm was truly done, and if your child has learned to not talk so much, leave it be, and don’t give your child the power to undermine the teachers authority…he was talking out of turn, and even teachers…just like mommies, have bad days and good days, they aren’t perfect…neither is any parent. Try to support the teacher and not be a helicopter parent that “flies in” at every complaint by the student. Kids have to learn to work under authority of all kinds, just like adults do in the workplace.

You need to go to the principal. The teacher had no rights to do this. You should definitely report this as this kind of behavior toward your son might continue in the future.

no, it is not appropriate, you must report this incident at once! GOD forbid if something like this happens in the care of the teacher, maybe even worse, the child’s arm broke or got swollen, matters would have been much worse. i believe it is better to report this as soon as possible

did it really happen though?

This is absolutely nuts.

Of course that you should report this to everybody..not only the principal. This is unacceptable.
