“Florante at Laura” written by Francisco Balagtas Baltazar, is an allegory, a figurative mode of representation conveying a meaning other than the literal. Here are some representations and symbolisms of that brilliant masterpiece:

Florante (main character) = Filipino people

Nakatali ang kamay, paa at leeg sa puno (Florante’s hands, feet and neck are tied in a tree) = The Philippines have no freedom to speak{neck is tied}, and move{hands & feet are tied}.

Gubat (jungle; the setting) = the country Philippines

Malapit sa Aberno/Impyerno (the setting was near the Hell) = Experiencing trials and hardships

Makamandag na Tubig sa gubat (Very poisonous water in the jungle) = The very strict rules

Malalaking puno ng higera (Big trees with dark leaves) = Powerful Government

Serpyente (serpent) = Filipinos who have not been loyal to the country

Kalunos-lunos na huni ng ibon (pitiful tune of the birds) = suffering Filipinos

Kulay luksang mga bulaklak (black / dark-colored flowers) = abused Filipino women

Baging na namimilipit sa sanga ng punongkahoy (sticks to the branches of the trees)= Filipinos who are always sticking to the Spaniards
