No. you are probably not “dumb.” Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. When I was in a high school I checked out a self programmed text on algebra. If I got the answer correct I went on, if not, the book sent me to a different page to reinstruct me. Now that I am a teacher I find that the Key to Math series is great for helping older students as well as kids as young as 5th grade . I think it was intended for home schooling. Each small book is on one topic such as addition of fractions. It is well explained with lots of pictures and comes with an answer key. I use the Key to Math series for fractions and decimals as supplemental material since the regular math program just assumes that everyone know all of these areas already.

Of course a good tutor might help also. A good teacher would help you figure out exactly what you are weak on, and help develop a program for you to rapidly improve. You might also look for software to help you practice those areas.

Please talk with your math teacher. He or she might be able to help you get over the rough spot and get some help for you. OR your teacher might agree that you are in way over your head and allow you to transfer before the quarter is too far gone. I once ” audited ” a physics class first semester and then took it for credit the second semester, because physics is just not my thing, but it was required to get into the college I wanted to go to. You might ask your counselor about what options are available to you.

To be in Advanced Algebra in 10th grade says you are pretty smart! If you’re having problems in the class, talk to your teacher and see if you can get the help you feel like you need to understand what you’re not getting. Don’t give up! See if there is a classmate that could give you a hand, too. Good luck to you!

I run a machine shop, math is something we use everyday , i have 16 employees and only about 5 understand fractions. Your not alone in this , but i would try to pay a little more attention to what they are trying to teach you. Math is a chain link, dont miss too many pieces or your going to struggle.
