why isn’t makaton free?

My son needs to use makaton sign language to communicate. The only way to learn makaton is to go on one of their courses and buy their books which are very expensive. It has also occured to me that if the books were more readily available then more children would learn makaton making it easier for him to communicate with others.

In America, if your child is from ages 3 to 21, your local board of education is required to assist you with the resources your child needs. If your child is under age 3 and already in early intervention, the same thing applies. You can push for something you think will really help your child, but if they think another form of sign language will work for your child, then that is what you receive materials for.

There are different organizations that loan materials to parents or teachers of special needs children. In NJ, I am a member of the EIRC (Educational Information and Resource Center,) and they have tons of materials you can borrow. From resource and idea books to entire curriculums, videos and game. Ask your child study team, especially your child study team social worker or parent liaison where you can find resources.
