I would love to have a “paid” vacation…my “summer vacation” is full of taking three certification classes, teaching summer school and planning lesson plans for next year. I work everyday. I take personal days during the school year but do not know when I actually stayed home during one of those days. I was at the school meeting with parents. I leave my house at 6:30 in the morning at get home at 4:30 and still think about my students, talk about my students or meet with the union, my administrators or working parents. I have been to work w/ pnemonia, flu, cold, anything b/c of a shortage of subs. You might think you are being funny about this but ask any school teacher or family member of a school teacher and they will tell you teachers never get a break. We are called at home at all hours, spotted out in public and so much more. We are called bad names by students and parents all to educate america. I would love to have a vacation where I got paid and didn’t have to do a thing.

Most teachers in this country are underpaid. In my county we get 10 days of leave a year and only a few paid holidays. My pay is for 196 days. When you consider that I have a Master’s degree and 4 years of experience, I only make $25 an hour. Then I take work home, take courses during the year and summer for recertification and plan lessons that are quite extensive not to mention all the committees and other associations that come with being a teacher. I suggest for all people who make decisions about educators to be one for a year. If our President, V.P, Governors, and Board of Education people taught for a year and then scrutinized their paychecks- they would probably quit!

I would love to have the opportunity to try it as a frenchman though! 🙂

i don’t know about french teachers. in chicago, the public schools have what is called extended pay. they do not get paid 12 months a year. they take out an amount of money 10 school mths. it is held for you so you can get a decent check july and august. chicago gives no overtime. 6 hrs in class and every night hours of work and this includes weekends. teachers all over are faced today with problems of discipline, paper work, lesson plans extra meetings before and after school, calling parents, keeping a grade book with tons of grades all subjects. in h.s. you teach one subject but still alot of work you have 5 classes but about 180 students, facing the day and maybe you could get paid to teach crafts, football, etc. not amounting toomuch extra pay. paid sick days, not vacation days, 10 a year 1 a month. business days 3 a year. all workers get days and weeks of vacation no matter their job. there are alot of dedicated teachers out there but you have some that are not. at my school, you will be forced to transfer or you can quit. it’s up to the principal. she rates us and so does the region. they come in our rooms, stay awhile, you should be on the subject at that time following your lesson plan. you meet with the principal so she can tell youhow good or bad you did. when i first started teaching it was different-easier but still a challenge. it’s a thankless job. days i took off we called a mental health days– we needed it. so don’t teach in chicago

this is tricky…. but its apples/oranges

the French actually take vacation, and get paid.

most teachers I know have a 10-month contract, or in my case, a 175-day contract…. essentially we get paid for about 9-10 months of work. … this much $ for this much work.

its not 12 months salary for 10 months work.

its 10 months salary for 10 months work.

many have their salary paid over 12 months, so they get a check every month, but others take it over 9 or 10 months.

I don’t have vacation days. … if school is in session, we are supposed to be there … when school is out… we are also out…. but it is not a paid vacation … there is no school.

we get one sick day per month. I can’t just go to Hawaii for a week during the middle of the school year.

many teachers get summer jobs… teaching summer school, or in industry, in the community, etc.

Go into teaching for a year and see if it’s the cakewalk you seem to think it is.
