The host provides something it needs, like food or environment. If the parasite was to kill the host, it would no longer have the benefit of the food or environment the host provided, and would have to go search for a new host (or source) or it would die.

This is a little more technical than you probably want, but “biotrophic” parasites (like a virus) cannot survive in a dead host and therefore keep their hosts alive. A virus needs its host to be able to multiply. In contrast, “parasitoids” use another organism’s tissue for their own nutritional benefit until the host eventually dies from loss of tissue or nutrients.
