Aren’t you lucky. This is Slow September, a month we focus on supporting our farmers by eating locally (100mile radius). And you get to teach a group of kids where their food comes from. I only have my two.

Well all year we’ve been getting ready with planting a garden. But it’s harvest time. You can find a local farm that sells locally and will let you explore at. http://www.eatwellguide.org/index.cfm

I also like the story book “Apples and Pumpkins” by Anne Rockwell to start off harvest talk.

A greens tasting party….have you ever tasted sorrel?!? sooo good.

My favorite body activity is taking a ceramic tile (white preferred) let the kids make a mess putting all kinds of sticky food condiments on it. let the mess dry and the next day they use a tooth brush to get it clean. Simulating tooth brushing.

First of all there sure is a variance in age groups. You could probably have the 8 yr. olds help teach the younger kids

In regards to the “Theme of the Month,” Farm/Your Body, the only thing that comes to my mind (no laughing allowed) are cow’s and horses. I just don’t get the “your body” end of it.

I’m walking away now and will leave this one for the 8 yr olds.

Maybe I’m just out of touch or need to go back to preschool.

This is a great little craft resource with directions and recipes for crafts – http://www.craft-kits.net/craft-projects.htm

It has themes, holiday crafts and a variety of topics.

Most are suited for children in that age range.

Best of luck!

I’ve seen other teachers use life sized self portraits on butcher paper ( or those rolls of newspaper paper that you can get for cheap- from your local newspaper) or if you want something smaller and more permanent My Quiet Dolls are really fun for kids to make, like paper dolls but out of felt, you can find them on www.arkessentials.com. They don’t tear and mine have even gone thru the wash on occasion. If you ask they’ll probably fax you the pattern so you could start asap 🙂

the farm and your body…seems odd to have them together. Anywho….for farm- make paper plate farm animal masks, thumb print farm animals, hand print turkeys, farm animal collage(have them cut pictures out of mag. and glue them), cotton ball sheep, get patterns of pigs and paint them with mud, patterns of cows and dot them with black spots.

for you body….trace them on large paper and have them color it to look like them, then fill out at sheet for each of them “all about me” with things like their favorite color, what they want to be, fav. food etc.
