Why are most college advisors worthless?

When you go see them they act like they just got a glance at your file 2 seconds ago and don’t have a clue about anything even though you made the appointment a week ago? And then they basically make you do all the legwork. So tell me again, why am I paying you when I am the one doing all of the research? Just wondering if every college is like that?

A lot of universities are like this. Your advisor probably believes it is beneath him or her to do this part of the job. It is a requirement that few professors love. They view themselves as academics, and have a distaste for the mundane parts of their job like classes and dealing with students.

That’s an unfair statement. Just because you’ve had a bad experience with your adviser, doesn’t make most of them bad. I take offense to that since I’m an adviser at a university. No, not all colleges have bad advisers. In fact, we are often commended for providing excellent service to our students. We go above and beyond the call of duty.

I can’t speak for the adviser that you had your bad experience with since it does not involve me, but perhaps you can ask to see another adviser. If you feel that this adviser isn’t giving you the adequate attention you desire, ask someone else for help. Maybe you’ll find another adviser who will be more sympathetic to your needs.

Keep in mind that if you go on in life demanding or assuming that people will do things for you in your life, you’ll usually get bad service. That’s what I’ve noticed anyway.

Best wishes.

Probably because they’re smart enough to realize that researching your courses and handling your educational path is your responsibility. It is not their job to cater to you or do all your research for you. You have to work with and for them too. Once you stop being a whiny, lazy, spoiled brat, you’ll realize they have hundreds of students to deal with and they don’t have the time to waste on just you.

My counselors worked well with me and advised me on the right path but I made certain I knew what I was doing and what I need to do as well. The counselors are only a portion of what needs to be done. The rest is up to you.
