How do I stay awake in class?

My class is really cold, but it’s hot outside! So it looks weird after class when i’m wearing a huge jacket. Well I have 1 pack of pop tarts and milk for breakfast. At about 12:00 p.m. I start dying. I have classes at 8, but I wake up at 6 to get ready. Also the teacher is kind of monotoned.

I don’t know if caffeine actually works. I’ve never noticed huge differences. i might feel sleepy but i don’t know if caffeine actually helps at all.

Go to bed at a decent hour…8 hours of sleep. Eat a REAL breakfast (POP TARTS? Your poor body!)…high energy cereal (e.g. Total). Eat at least one apple for lunch (better than a cup of coffee). Caffeine is a quick high with a drastic plunge when it wears off.

Speaking from experience…at 60 and putting in full days not only in the office, but hossing material around (I’m in between projects with foreign navies and run herd on some young guys moving furniture, doing warehouse work AND at the same time, working with some folks for the USS Intrepid in NYC (they’re’ there, I’m in Va) concerning it’s overhaul. On top of that, I take a class on Monday nights, work with a children’s ministry on Wednesday evening ( www.awana.org ), then go to choir practice. Work on my Bible study lesson during the week evenings for Sunday. Work around the yard and house. Ride with the Patriot Guards from time to time ( www.patriotguard.org ). Take my dog to the beach to play or just walk around the neighborhood. Go to bed about 11:15 every night but Friday (stay up REAL late, like midnight he he). And even have time and energy for ‘playing’ with my lady often.

First of all – ANYTHING less than six hours of sleep is considered INSOMNIA… Get the recommended 8 hours (or at LEAST 6)!!!

Second – Cold keeps you awake, while the heat puts you to sleep. Ditch the jacket, and it might also help your appearance…

Third – have a PROPER breakfast that ISN’T filled with all that sugar. Try a bowl of cereal, or some toast instead.

Fourth – Pack an energy bar/breakfast bar in your bag – and chow down between classes (or during break)

Fifth – Forget gum. Most teachers/schools have policies AGAINST gum in the classroom!

Sixth – What about LUNCH??? There is no mention when/IF you take lunch. Refuel THEN if you really need the boost

And FINALLY – Avoid caffeine like the PLAGUE!!! Not only is it addictive, most of the products that contain it are LOADED with sugar. Besides – good luck trying to get a cup of coffee in the average school ;);););)

Not every prof will keep their students actively engaged. Anyone with a monotone voice can make listeners fall asleep even when you are interested in the subject!. By identifying the problem, you are making progress.

Is there a health issue that could keep you drowsy? You might want to post this question under the health and nutrition forum too. The sugar in 1 pack of pop tarts might have an effect as well. Are you exercising? Fatigue can be a symptom of many ailments…..get a checkup and see a dietitian to provide you with some suggestions.

Keep a warm jacket or sweater in your back pack and pull it out when you get to class. For boredom, start taking notes in class. It helped me to not only become a good note taker, but also it helped me stay awake in class. Another thing, ask questions or ask the teacher to repeat him/herself if you missed something while taking notes. Participation in class will keep you awake. I found sitting in front of the class also kept me awake. If possible take a power nap (20 minutes) before class or during lunch break. Lastly eat a better breakfast that has less sugar, go for protein. Sugar is a temporary energy booster, it always falls short when you need it the most.

First off the pop tarts gotta go.. You are having a sugar crash that’s causing you’re slump. Caffeine? How old are you? Not a good idea. Nope, not at any age, don’t start now. Get to bed at a reasonable hour, plenty of exercise and fresh air and eat a HEALTHY balanced breakfast. Good luck.

I know of one person where caffeine puts her to sleep. You might be person number two. There are some things you can do to stay awake. Fidgeting helps, jittering you leg may be annoying to others around you but it can help keep you awake. Other stimulants can help too, such as red bull. Drinking cold beverages, like some ice water or a slurpee or something like that helps some other people. Sit up straight. It’s good for your posture and because it’s not exactly comfortable it will help you stay awake. Basically annoy yourself, like get one of those little rubber balls that bounces really high and put it in your back pocket. A lump under your buttcheek is annoying and will help keep you awake. I’m sure you can think of other things to do as well. Hope it helps.

the pop tarts are bad. you get a rush of sugar, your body metabolizes it, and you crash. you need a healthier breakfast that will give you energy all day, like an oatmeal bar or a bagel or something. caffeine should help. try drinking a cup of coffee or red bull in the morning!

Take notes and chew gum. This always helps. I never sleep at night and I always feel like I’m going to die in class, but if I take notes and stuff I’ll manage to keep my brain working and getting the juices flowing and all lol. It really helps. And raise your hand sometimes, stay involved in the class. Sit straight up, back against the chair, don’t slouch! Good luck.

PS: No form of caffeine works for me! It seems like it doesn’t work for you either. Don’t rely on it.

i fall asleep in my afternoon classes, and i usually start class at 11, and wake up at 10! i fall asleep when the professor is monotone and super boring and doesnt engage his students in the subject matter. But as soon as something fun is happening, im instantly awake and paying attention. If you can, the best is to try to take a short nap before class, like 20 minutes, and youll find that you wont be so prone to falling asleep. When i can, i try to take naps because then i find that even when im super bored, i still stay awake (after all, i just slept for an hour). If your schedule doesnt allow the nap time, try to go to bed earlier to get 8 hours or at least 7. Try eating something during class, like chips or candy or granola bars or somthing, eating keeps you awake because your body is signaled to get ready for digestion and such. Chewing gum doesnt work for me (i just fall asleep with the gum in my mouth) but you can try it and see, maybe if its super minty gum. For one of my classes this semester, i’ve accepted i cant stay awake so i just read the chapter right after class, or this week ive tried just reading the chapter hes lecturing about during class, instead of listening to him. I think its his voice that makes me asleep (and just sitting there just makes it worse). But if your class is a hard class you need to stay awake for, then i guess that wont work for you.

Good luck!
