What would you do if you felt your work was copied?

I take an english lit. class online, and we have weekly assignments for each reading. This particular assignment was due Wednesday, and I posted mine on Tuesday. About a week later, today, another student posted their answer, which was mine, but with a few words changed. It’s like reading my paragraphs over again, with simple words like “rather” changed to “instead of.” I don’t plan to say anything, because I don’t want to get the student in trouble, but it bothers me a little. What would you do?

I would immediately notify your professor and point to both pieces of work — including the dates that they were uploaded!

Hopefully your prof will have already figured this out, but it doesn’t hurt to be proactive in this situation. This is YOUR intellectual work and a simple rewording of a phrase or two does not change that.

If you wish to go far enough, you could sue the other student; especially if the prof sees it your way.

Good luck!

How would the other student know what you posted? Is your work public information? Shouldn’t your work be for the teacher only?

Anyway, that doesn’t really matter. I did have one idiot in a computer class I took who didn’t know what he doing. He for some reason thought that he would be able to get some advice from me (as well as from the other students in class, he would even root through the trash to pull out work that other students threw away) but the buck stopped with me. Let me tell you he never bothered me again.

If you had your work copy written the other student could be taken to court. I would say something to your teacher just in case your teacher thinks that you two were in collusion together thus causing your teacher to give you a lesser grade than what you deserve.

I really do not like it when people cannot do their own work thinking that they can skate on through college/highschool by taking other people’s ideas.

In this case, you should never worry of the other student. If that student didnt worry of being caught then you as the innocent person shouldnt feel so. Be frank and let your lecturer know abt this. Let the lecturer to find out the truth.

Wait to post your assignments until they are due. Unless your teacher is asleep, they noticed the similarities between the two assignments and will handle it appropriately.

Your teach will probably notice somethings up, and since you posted first the other person will be in trouble.

There’s no need to confront anyone. If yours was posted first it will be time stamped -the prof. will know who the cheater is.
