what is the word for: resoect for the dead?

my essay is like this:

September 6, 2007, Lelani Wilds died. Sounds like an every day’s paper obituary, right? Most people will say, “Better her than me.” Some will feel a little sorrow, but overall, no hard feelings. You did not know the girl, and who cares, people die all the time. But did you ever stop to think how her family is copping with the after shock of her death?

When the word was out about Aaliyah’s death, most people felt sad. Why is it that a death is only worth giving attention to if you knew or heard of that person? Some people have the wrong definition of ( this is where the word goes ), while others don’t want to deal with it. My definition of (+++) is when you’ve realized that a person will never be able to make any kind of action on earth again; they won’t ever be seen breathing or talking again. When you realize that their human qualities are stripped and will never be given back, and yet you still gave that respect to them, not said, “Who cares?”

We came across a lot of attitudes when my little brother passed. We we’re given a lot of respect because of who he was. No one famous just a soldier who gave his all! From some we got “I’m sorry” and yet from others we got “well we shouldn’t be over there any way look at what supporting the troops got y’all”. I couldn’t believe the disrespect we were shown by some who said that. People need to be sympathetic when some one dies no matter who it is. I think that the better than me attitude is all wrong for any one to have but then I say the same thing when i pass some one getting a ticket.

As for the essay I don’t see too many problems with it besides spelling errors. A good word to use besides respect would be to honor the dead/ deceased.

I think you may be looking for the word mourning. It is the process of coping with a loved one’s death. And I’m sure many people are mourning Lelani, not only her family. Your essay has depth, however, I have not run into many people in my life who will disregard death as a “better her than me.” As for giving attention to the death, her death seems to have gotten quite a bit of attention (I ran it through a search engine), and I don’t believe it will be forgotten for a long time. If you just happened to pick this name out of a million recently deceased, I think you may want to look it up and rethink your decision if you plan to turn this paper into school. Lelani’s death was a terrible tragedy, and never should have happened. Also, due to the circumstances surrounding her death, I don’t think it is very respectful to the family to be airing this “news” to your class. Some people may have the attitude you are referring to, but some people are in mourning and you should show respect to them.

I agree with Sillygirl considering I know this family and it not your place to inforn your class. It’s a very privite and emotional matter. Your paper doesn’t even justify it. It makes it sound like just “another death.” To this family it’s not and until you are in that position, which will probably never happen, I think you should rethink this out of respect. Thank you.
