Usually teachers will tell you the exact schedule in their syllabus. The above is a “standard” distribution but some teachers — and schools — are more harsh or more lenient. Also, many teachers tend to round up, so even if you have an 89, they’ll bump you to an A-.

As to what a good GPA for college is, well, that depends. Because schools are grading on a 5 pt./4 pt. scale and no two schools grades alike, it’s harder to say. Some schools offer no extra point. Some schools offer the extra point for APs if you take the test. At some schools you get the point for the AP class even if you don’t take the test. Many schools give you the point for all honors or AP classes taken. Because of this discrepency, colleges tend to look at your standing in the class in conjunction with your g.p.a. So, if you have a 4.2 but are in the 75th percentile of the class, that will count for less than having a 3.9 but graduating no. 1.

As far as what an “excellent” gpa is, it’s whatever straight A’s are at your school. A 95 average overall at you old school would be considered “excellent.”
