What do you think about teaching race relations as a course in school?

Teachers would have to be certified in it, etc. – just a forum so children can begin to understand other races, but in an educational setting? I just feel like we’re in desperate need of something to improve race relations in the U.S.?

I thought the USA had all the answers. 😉

Can one TEACH personal relations?

I believe not. A teacher/parent should firstly LIVE as an example, and secondly DISCUSS such relations with children in a reasoned, empathetic way.

Being a teacher and having grown up in “apartheid” South Africa, I had to change my own mind-set radically when my kids started asking questions. My eldest son’s best friend is of another race. Does it matter?

Some of my most trusted and valued colleagues are of a different race. Does it matter?

We respect cultural differences. But these occur even within one race. Aren’t white Americans different from white Germans?

No, actually not. Because when it comes down to it we’re all Americans.
