Advertising and public relations are related, but not the same. Advertising is a more straightforward way of selling your business or product. It includes many different types of media — web sites, banner ads, PPC, radio or TV, newspaper, magazines, outdoor and so on. Public relations is a bit more subtle. PR involves any actions taken to position your company in a positive light. That may be working with the media to place a story or to minimize the negative impact of a company crisis. It can involve corporate philanthropy and being visible as a supporter of your community. The goal of both advertising and PR is to build business. Advertising is easier to get, but more costly. PR, while sometimes free, is harder to get but also viewed as more credible by the public. For any business, advertising and PR should work together for the greatest impact. For example, let’s say your company is running an ad campaign with a special offer for new and improved widgets. Teams of employees you send out to community events should be wearing shirts promoting widgets and carrying fliers for your special offer. They should also be knowledgeable enough about the special offer to be able to talk about it to anyone they meet.
