The Masterplan for Higher Education in California says the top 10 percent of high school students are entitled to go to a UC and the top third are entitled to a CSU. You need math through Alg II, 4 yrs. of English, 2 years of History, 2 years of lab science, 2 years of language and 1 year of fine arts for both campuses. Honors and AP classes strengthen your application both in terms of your g.p.a. and the quality of your transcript.

Here’s the profile for UCLA:

NARROWING THE FIELD

Freshman Class of Fall 2003

44,971 applications submitted (nearly 19,000 with 4.0 GPA or higher)

10,608 admitted

4,400 anticipated to enroll

PROFILE, ADMITTED STUDENTS

Freshman Class of Fall 2003

Average GPA (including honors and Advanced Placement): 4.24

Average number of semesters of honors and AP classes: 18.6

Average SAT I: 1332

Average SAT II (Writing): 667

Average SAT II (Math): 685

Average SAT II (Student’s Choice): 691

To get into a UC with your grades, you are going to fall under “special action admit” which means you must add something special (ie. athletics, arts, etc.) to the school which makes up for your grades.

If you’re really shooting for a UC, UC Riverside and UC Merced are considered the easiest to get into.

Cal States are easier to get into. Many — like SDSU, Northridge, Fullerton, and Chico have reputations as fun schools for traditional college age students. With your grades, you’ll probably find that the classes here are more in line with your abilities too.

it depends on the school and on the major you want to switch to. i know that with cal poly, it’s pretty much impossible to switch your major after getting accepted. for most other UCs/CSUs though, as long as you’re switching majors within the specific school-branch thing you’ve been accepted to (ex. UCSC school of communications), it’s pretty easy. if you’re switching to a major in a different school (like from communications to engineering) then you have to reapply or something.
