You use them to join 2 independent clauses (meaning 2 complete sentences). If you join 2 complete sentences with just a comma, it’s called a “comma splice” and is incorrect.

“I find semi-colons confusing; sometimes I am not sure when to use them.”

See, those are 2 complete sentences (called “independent clauses”) joined by a semi-colon.

You use a semi-colon in the place of a conjunction

e.g. Billy wanted a goat but at the same time he wanted a chicken ( just roll with the stupid example)
