Mature Student doing upgrading courses – not good at math, help!?

I have finally decided to go back to school – I have to do some upgrading courses, – I am terrified of Math, not sure why, just have never been good at it. The good news is, I have lots of help and support, but I am still afraid. Any advise out there on how to get passed this fear of numbers and learning math.

The most important thing about overcoming fear is to believe in yourself, since fearing something is pretty much the lack of faith and thinking that you can’t do it. Since you already have lots of help and support, then the quality of your work in math shouldn’t be much of a problem, and your skills WILL improve with the support you’re getting. Nobody is good at anything at first, but people learn, so have faith in yourself, believe that you CAN do it, and try your best to ignore all the negative comments, because that can make you lose faith easily, it’s happened to me =\

and additionally, you can try using outside resources such as internet or library to learn more about math, and stay ahead of the class by a few lessons, then it’ll help you have an easier understanding of it, and you’ll have an easier time in the course

that’s all I can think of right now… heh

good luck =)

I applaud your going back to school, good luck.

There’s two things that I would recommend. The first is a thing called Spark charts, it’s basically just a chart that gives formula’s, or helpful hints for all kinds of math from simple algebra to high end calculus.

You can find them at any book store, or online, just pick the appropriate one.

The second is a series of math help books with the name “demystified”

I like the dummy books usually, but in this case the demystified are much better help books. They don’t use modern language, but rather explain it from the bottom up.

Once again, good luck.

You’re afraid of numbers? How do you feel about being alone in a dark alley with four very large and menacing looking men wearing ski masks?

Whenever you sense that fear of math approaching, just say to yourself; “Numbers don’t carry concealed weapons, Numbers don’t carry concealed weapons, . . . .”
