Not in the Southwestern US–many kids quit school, work, go back for their GED, and then go to the Community College for management/nursing, etc. courses. Some even go further and transfer into the 4-yr colleges afterwards.
Back in the Northeast, most kids finish high school, and go directly into the 4-yr college.

Yes. The GED requires that you only have up to an 8th grade educational knowledge base, whereas the diploma requires a 12th grade level base.

near brain dead can pass the GED; to earn a diploma requires attendance, study, and discipline to complete the requirements; pot smoking delinquents are big believers in GEDs

It depends, if you want to go to college and you score well on the SAT or ACT, it doesn’t matter much. If you are 18 or so, it doesn’t look good, but if you earned it later in life it’s perfectly acceptable.
