Gifted and Talented offensive?

I do not understand how the term ‘Gifted and Talented’ is offensive to some poeple. I was put in the program, but I did not feel at all higher then my peers. From how it was explained to me it is similar to special education. It targets strengths as well as weak spots. Do the poeple that take offense to this term take offense to term ‘Special Education’ as well? This is another IEP just like anyother.

Please make your points on if this is offensive or not.

Some think that the ‘gifted’ are “show-offs” and better than them.

People view special education as a lower education.

I don’t believe any of that, but that is generally the view.

I do believe, however, that everyone should be able to ‘show-off’. For example, I have a 3.7 GPA, which is .05 away from being gifted. The thing is, I am told that I am the hardest worker in the class… in the school. Why am I not recognized, then? Does society only recognize the people who are below and above us? What about the ‘average’ people?

As a teacher, This year is the 1st of 13 years that I have had a group of G.T. students that I really had to sit down and talk to about their attitude. They were making comments about how they were so much smarter than everyone else in 5th grade- they were the top of the class–others were “stupid”. When I told them G.T. was considered special education because it was a class the general population did not go to.

They were shocked! They did not want to be associated with the term “special ed”. The resource kids in 5th are very low learners. I finally told them-maybe their purpose of being such quick learners-was to help others. This years group is different than past years, most realize it’s an honor, they are they because I.Q. and creativity are high. Since our “talk”, the G.T. kids, who are great kids by the way, have went out of their way, to help others with reading/math. I’m very proud of them!!!!! You sound very humble, but G.T. is for children preforming above grade level,I know referral process.

It’s more that it separates people/kids into groups. If there was a group that was “talented” and a group that was “average” then the people in the average group would be considered less. Granted it’s just by comparison but it is there.

Personally, I do not care. One thing I learned is in one way or another someone is more talented than you and you are more talented than them. An example is someone who has 10 years experience but no degree and someone who has no experience with a degree. They both learn from each other.

I think better terms could be used to explain the special program you are in. Just be your own sweet self, and don’t bother with people who seem to be offended; they are probably just jealous. A true friend is always happy for you when good things happen.

im sure u really are,and that is a gr8 thing! some people are just tired of their friends kids, for example EVERY parent i know says their kids are gifted, talented or geniuses,by law of averages, are they ALL really that wonderful?look at all the “gifted” student bumper stickers, all my friends with kids have them!maybe when i have kids,i’ll think mine are the most brilliant kids in the world, but no offense to you,it does get tiring listening to all those “my child is so intelligent/creative/good looking” stories.
